Detroit's top swing band, the Planet D Nonet, has garnered NINE Detroit Music Awards in the past 16 years. In that time, the band has released 11 CDs and toured in as many states including a couple memorable trips to New Orleans. For its twelfth recording, the band has chosen to pay tribute to the great maestro, Duke Ellington. In particular, the focus is on Duke's later years, from Newport in 1956 on through Afro Bossa, and including his incredible soundtrack to Otto Premiger's film "Anatomy of a Murder."
These songs offer great opportunities for the members of the Planet D Nonet to sink their teeth in and leave their own mark. Other than Billy Strayhorn's "Take the A Train," these are all little-known gems from the Ellington/Strayhorn cannon.
