Stop Making Sense Plus One

The Janice Charach Gallery presents "Stop Making Sense Plus One", an exhibition showcasing contemporary craft by the finest artists in the Detroit Metropolitan area, opening on June 4 and continuing through July 12, 2023.

The Janice Charach Gallery is located at 6600 W. Maple in West Bloomfield, inside the Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit. The 5,000 sq. foot, two floor gallery is noted for its state of the art space with its soaring skylight.

"Stop Making Sense" was first organized in 2022 by Kim Harty, Chair of Craft and Materials Studies at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit. This year Harty brings the artists of that show back together along with an additional invited artist of their choice to the large space of the Janice Charach Gallery. In total 45 artists will be featured.

"With new works and new artists, this expanded showcase of Detroit contemporary craft is an experience like no other," says Natalie Balazovich, Janice Charach Gallery Director.

According to Harty, the exhibition closely examines contemporary craft in Detroit. "As the title of the exhibit implies, each of the artists subverts our expectation of craft when they do things that stop making sense," says Harty, " They are fearless with material, adventurous with design, engaged in experiential aspects of craft, and committed to expanding the scope of what is possible in their particular material discipline."

"We are thrilled to host this extraordinary exploration of contemporary craft," said Balazovich. "Kim Harty brings a vision of what contemporary craft can be and a network of brilliant artists who share her understanding. It makes for a very exciting experience for gallery goers and I can't wait to see their delight."

Balazovich explained that the art works range in every size imaginable from large installations to small. Materials include everything from traditional seeming fabric and basket weaving materials to steel and man made synthetics. Sometimes they reflect a new take on a chair or a wall hanging or an entirely new application of materials.

"The contemporary craft scene in metro Detroit is one of the most exciting in the country and we consider it as a great privilege to use our space to showcase these talented, forward thinking Detroit artists," said Balazovich.

In addition to being Chair of Craft and Materials Study at College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Kim Harty is a Professor of Glass. She is an artist and scholar whose work investigates the connection between craft and performance through sculpture, installation, video and performance. She is heavily informed by her training as a glassblower and is interested in undoing traditional methods of making and investigating how materials can confound their expected function.

The Janice Charach Gallery is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is always free and open to the public.
